NOTES

This is a very old church with the tower dating from around 1250 and the rest of the Church around 1450. The font is even old , Norman from about 1170. The ceilure is one of the finest in the country having been restored in the mid seventies

THE BELLS

The tower contains four bells, they all have new headstocks, wheels and bearings unfortunately due to the fact the frame is of historic interest but nothing better than a collection of old oak beams in my opinion they can not for safety reasons be rung full circle. There are Ellacombe Chimes fitted for day to day use , however for weddings and other special occasions they use to be swung chimed but this has now had to stop due to the condition of the frame. They are nice sounding bells even though very much out of tune so it is a real shame that they can not be rung.

A copy of the insepction report can be downloaded here

DETAILS OF THE BELLS

Treble An Alphabet bell from A to K

2nd The second bell was recast and re-hung in 1904 as a memorial to the coronation of King Edward VII

3rd The 3rd bell is fifteenth century with a prayer inscribed PROTEGE VIRGO PIA QUOS SANCTA MARIA ( Protect, holy Virgin Mary, those whom I call together )

TENOR The tenor bell which weighs about 10 cwt was recast in 1637.
